Exams are now offered only electronically.Procedures for application to sit for an exam are different so it is important to check the candidate bulletin offered by the exam vendor, PSI.. Detailed procedures are posted on the DPOR web site. The applicant first submits an application to PSI, preferably electronically, to sit for the exam. Cost for the exam is $84. Once the determination of eligibility is made, PSI contacts the applicant to set the time and test site. There are three locations in Northern Virginia, one in Richmond, one in Tidewater, one in Maryland for the Eastern Shore, one in Roanoke, and one in Tennessee. Addresses and directions are provided in the online instructions.
If the applicant fails the exam, he or she may reapply to sit for another— conceivably within two or three days. The applicant pays the exam fee for each examination taken. When the applicant passes the exam, PSI then instructs the candidate on the next step— submitting the package
to DPOR. This requires a $100 application fee to DPOR.
The exam vendor has an online candidate bulletin to explain the application process. It also includes, towards the middle (pages 8-19) of this 32-page PDF document, you will find all of the application forms. After the form section, you will find on page 20 useful information on the test areas by license classification. Included are the need-to-know criteria, core competencies, and required capabilities. Be sure to read what you are allowed to bring to the exam site.
If you do not want to wade through the candidate bulletin, we have grouped the exam content area subjects by classification for you. Click the NEXT button to go there now. A comparison of exam results is included. We have some study tips too!
