Description

The Bacteriological Laboratory Workshop is designed to help drinking water laboratory personnel improve their knowledge and skills in performing bacteriological sampling and analysis for public drinking water supplies subject to the Safe Drinking Water Act. It combines classroom lectures with hands-on laboratory work.

The course covers drinking water microbiology, sampling techniques, principal lab techniques used for coliform bacteria analysis (multiple tube fermentation, membrane filtration, presence/absence technique, heterotrophic plate count), laboratory quality control and certification, lab equipment, and state and federal regulations, including recent changes in EPA's regulations governing biological contaminants.

Who Should Attend?

The course is intended for laboratory personnel and water treatment operators who actually perform bacteriological tests on drinking water for public water supply systems. It is not intended to address testing of private well supplies.

Time And Place

Classes will be held daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, in  the Addison-Evans Water Production and Laboratory Facility, 13400 Hull Street Road, Midlothian, Virginia.  For map and directions click here.

Entrance into the facility will be by roster only.  Individuals who have not been accepted for course will not be admitted.

Lodging And Meals

Lodging and meals are not provided. There are several motels and restaurants near  the Addison-Evans Water Production & Laboratory Facility.  It is sometimes difficult to find motel rooms on short notice; you are urged to make reservations once notified of acceptance into course.  The first four motels are located approximately 5 miles east of the plant. The last being the closest.

Cost

The registration fee for this course is $175 for members of AWWA and $215 for non-members. The fee includes college tuition, text books, breaks, and lab fee. The non-member differential will be applied toward a one-year membership in AWWA. Employees of organization members register at the member fee.
Space Limitations

Laboratory space limits the class size to 12 people; only one person per lab, please. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of information provided on the application form. Acceptance will be confirmed two weeks before the class begins.

Application

We must receive all application forms and full payment by the date shown on the form. No purchase orders, military training forms, or telephone registrations will be accepted.  Refunds will be made upon request until the registration deadline. Substitutions will be accepted at any time until Monday, October 28, for security reasons.
