The Advanced Short Schools for Waterworks and Wastewater Works Operators is a nonprofit organization. Created to provide training opportunities for waterworks and wastewater works operators in support of licensure, the Short Schools conducted a week long advanced short school in Lexington, Virginia, to complement the basic Short Courses for Waterworks and Wastewater Works Operators held at Virginia Tech. The Short School mission changed when the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality assumed the role of training wastewater works operators. Today, the Advanced Short Schools concentrates its resources into training activities and public information serving the drinking water industry.
No longer practical, the five-day advanced short school was canceled several years ago. Today, the Short Schools sponsor a bacteriological laboratory workshop, individual classes on topics of interest to the waterworks operators and the very popular course, Cross Connection Devices: Inspection, Maintenance, and Testing. The last being very popular with plumbers and backflow device workers in addition to operators.
